Lord of the Rings

If you get started reading The Fellowship of the Rings you will notice a lot of connections between characters.

 Different friendships spring up. 
Frodo/Sam
Legolas/Gimli
Merry/Pippin
Aragorn/Legolas

 In this story, Sam takes care of Frodo.  However, Sam is afraid of everything, especially being up high.  Even so, he is very brave. 

 Consider this excerpt:

 “Before Frodo could stop him, he sat down, swung his legs over the brink, and twisted round, scrabbling with his toes for a foothold. It is doubtful if he ever did anything braver in cold blood, or more unwise.”

 What does this show about Frodo's relationship to Sam? 

 Write an essay about friendship.  What would you do for a friend in danger?  What would he/she do for you?
Have you every been in a situation where you needed to take care of someone else?  

Was it a simple ordinary need or did you save someone from a burning building or runaway horse? 
Describe your thoughts about protecting and caring for friends.

Read Ender's Game

Another great book I like is Ender's Game.  It's the struggle for survival among kids at war.   Only they don't know their at war, exactly.  It's a little like Lord of the Flies, but the lessons are less revolting and more affirmative.  Read Ender's Game online Ender's Game Have you ever been jealous of a family member?  Did you ever worry that other people would appreciate them, and not appreciate you?  In Chapter 2 of Ender's Game, the reader meets Peter.  He's big brother to Ender and Valentine.   All three of the children were in a program for gifted children, but Ender has been in it the longest.   Ender did not see Peter as the beautiful ten-year-old boy that grown-ups saw, with dark, thick, tousled hair and a face that could have belonged to Alexander the Great.
